Because in His divinity, He is everywhere, He does not ascend nor descend. Therefore, in the Liturgy of St. Gregory we say “And You ascended into the heavens in the body…” This ascension is evidence that His Glorified Body is not subject to the earth’s gravitational laws. It is also evidence of His Divinity. He ascended before His disciples as they were looking. This scene strengthened their faith because the Lord not only resurrected using His Divine power, but He also ascended into heaven in front of them.
In His ascension to Heaven, He did not leave His church alone on Earth.
Raised Up to Sit in Heavenly Places
“And raised us up with him, and made us sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus” (Eph 2:6).
Our Salvation was achieved by our Lord Jesus Christ’s death on the cross and accomplished by His resurrection and lifting up from this world into heaven. The fullness of Christ’s resurrection is given in the ascension. The ascension completes the resurrection. Christ is Risen, Truly He is Risen!
As we celebrate the Glorious Feast of the Resurrection, let us rejoice in the glorious immortality of man brought about by the first born of the dead–our beloved Risen Lord. While it is important to commemorate our Lord Jesus Christ’s suffering on earth it is equally as important to profess our belief in the glorious resurrection of our Lord, His blessed soul was raised from the dead. Many of the early church fathers describe our Lord Jesus as “the first fruits from the dead”.
We can surmise four characteristics of the Lord Jesus Christ’s glorious resurrected body, 1) He was raised in flesh that was impassable, 2) Our Lord’s risen body was glorious, radiant and pure, 3) His Holy body was swift to appear and disappear at His will, and 4) His resurrected body of flesh was also spiritual in nature. The Holy Great Fast and Spiritual Discipline
“The true fast is that in which sins, anger, tongue, and instincts are under control” (St Basil the Great).
The Holy Great Fast is often referred to as “The Spring of Our Spiritual Life”. Spring being the most beautiful season of the year and a time of spiritual renewal.
The 55 days of the Holy Great Fast are considered the most Holy days of fasting of the Coptic Church. Fifty-five days include the forty days, which were fasted by the Lord Himself, the Passion Week, and the first initial week to prepare us spiritually before this great season of renewal. We fast to commemorate His sufferings on the Holy Cross, for spiritual discipline and our salvation.
Much has been written regarding fasting associated with foods. Yet, fasting is not only abstaining from certain foods. It is a time for us to have our hearts filled with the Holy Spirit. How can our hearts be filled with the Holy Spirit and guarded against all sin? Read More From Suscopts.org >
The church celebrates Jonah’ fast on February 2, 3 & 4, 2015.
“Jonah, according to Hebrew tradition, was the son of the widow, whom Elijah, the prophet, raised from the dead at Zarephath of Sidon (II Kings 17:10-24). He was a prophet in the Northern Kingdom of Israel around 825-784 BC. Therefore, Jonah prophesied during the reign of Jeroboam II, the King of Samaria (II Kings 14:25).
The Holy Book of Jonah in the Old Testament tells the familiar story of Jonah, the fleeing prophet. Forty-eight verses comprise the entire story. This is a story of a legendary character with a nature similar to our own. Jonah, a contemporary of the prophet Amos, had faults, shortcomings, and weaknesses” (Bishop Youssef, 2015). The praise of Kiahk (also known as “7 and 4″) on the Eve of Sunday is the praise of every eve of Sunday all year, since Sunday is the day of the Resurrection when the Church stays awake until daybreak. Eventually, it contacts the dawn of eternity, whose sun never leaves, because the Lord Jesus, the true Light, the Sun of Righteousness, will be its light. It begins with the Agpeya prayer in which the gospel of the meeting with the virgins who lit their lamps (Mat 25:1-13) is read, then the gospel of repentance out of love for Christ, offering feelings of their love with the fragrant oil which the woman poured (Luke 7:36-50).
