Matthew 6:3, 6 & 17

“when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly; when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly; when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

“Since we were wounded by sin, we must treat it with penance. But penance without fast is worthless. Then by fasting justify yourself before God!”
St. Basil

“I called out to the Lord from the midst of affliction directed at me, and he answered me. From the depths[c] of death[d] I cried out for help; and you heard my cry.” Jonah 2:2

We ask You, O merciful One, to do with us, we the sinners, as You did with the people of Nineveh, have mercy on us according to Your great mercy.

For You are a compassionate and an all merciful God, and You are kind, patient, and the good Philanthropic One.
